Chemical treatment makes aromatic polyamide fabric fireproof in oxygen atmosphere
Organic fabric is reacted first with vapors of a phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus oxybromide solution and then with bromine vapor, after neutralization it is flameproof in pure oxygen atmosphere. Soaking the fabric with mixture of ammonium polyphosphates increases flame resistance, but the polyphosphates are leached out during laundering

A comparative study of mental health and wellbeing among UK students on professional degree programmes
Despite elevated rates of suicide and evidence of poor mental health among medical professionals, there is a paucity of research in the UK into the mental health of students destined for these careers. This study estimated and compared the prevalence of mental ill-health in students studying veterinary medicine, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in the United Kingdom. A group of law students was also included, who, although subject to similar stressors as undergraduates, do not go on to share a heightened risk of suicide as professionals. A total of 1744 respondents completed a questionnaire with validated measures to assess wellbeing, psychological distress, depression and suicidal ideation and attempts. Results indicated that law students experienced the poorest mental health of the student groups studied. Wellbeing was highest among veterinary and medical students. However, the medical students were the most likely to have previously attempted suicide. These findings highlight the importance of directly comparing student groups and of appropriately supporting students as they progress through training and into the professions
Spatiotemporal patterns and agro-ecological risk factors for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (Alabama Rot) in dogs in the UK
Seasonal outbreaks of cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) have been reported annually in UK dogs since 2012, yet the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to explore whether any breeds had an increased or decreased risk of being diagnosed with CRGV, and to report on age and sex distributions of CRGV cases occurring in the UK. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare 101 dogs diagnosed with CRGV between November 2012 and May 2017 with a denominator population of 446,453 dogs from the VetCompass database. Two Kennel Club breed groups—hounds (odds ratio (OR) 10.68) and gun dogs (OR 9.69)—had the highest risk of being diagnosed with CRGV compared with terriers, while toy dogs were absent from among CRGV cases. Females were more likely to be diagnosed with CRGV (OR 1.51) as were neutered dogs (OR 3.36). As well as helping veterinarians develop an index of suspicion for the disease, better understanding of the signalment risk factors may assist in the development of causal models for CRGV and help identify the aetiology of the disease
Properties of Mg-doped Nd-Ba-Cu-O generic seed crystals for the top seeded melt growth of (RE)-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors
We have recently developed a new generic seed crystal that has been used successfully to fabricate any oriented, single grain (RE)-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductor by a cold seeding technique. In this paper we report the chemical, structural and microstructural properties of these seed crystals, including the variation of melting point, crystallographic parameters and volume fraction of Mg-rich inclusions in the Nd1 + xBa 2-x(Cu1-yMgy)3Oz matrix as a function of externally added MgO content. The influence of Mg-doping on the superconducting transition temperatures of YBCO grains fabricated using these seeds is investigated. Finally, an optimum MgO content of the generic seed that effectively controls the orientation of the seeded grain without compromising its superconducting properties is suggested from the many seed crystals fabricated with a wide range of Mg-rich addition

Beyond Simple, Easy, and Fast
The authors present their experiences implementing Summon, a web-based search engine similar to Google produced by the software company Serial Solutions, at Bowling Green State (BGSU) University Libraries (UL). The authors discuss using the teaching method of reflection, described by Char Booth in the book Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning: Instructional Literacy for Library Educators, to train librarians, students, and faculty to use the software. The authors describe personal and group instruction, training undergraduates to use Summon for research, and alternative search tools such as the EBSCO Publishing database
Conflict Between Direct Experience and Research-Based Evidence Is a Key Challenge to Evidence-Based Respiratory Medicine on British Racing Yards
Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) is a commonly diagnosed but variably defined syndrome of equine lower airway inflammation. The most recent American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) consensus statement, informed by research evidence, recommends a case definition based on clinical signs (poor performance or occasional coughing of at least 3 weeks duration), increased endoscopically-visible tracheal mucus, and bronchoalveolar lavage cytology, and proposes that the condition should be termed ‘mild-moderate equine asthma’ (mEA). In British Thoroughbred racehorses, research to date has focused on airway inflammation defined by increased tracheal mucus and inflammatory tracheal wash sample cytology. It has been unclear whether or to what extent the ACVIM consensus statement has influenced the practice of British racing veterinarians. The aim of this qualitative study was to characterise and understand rationales for current practices relating to diagnosing and managing airway inflammation in British racehorses. Audio-recorded focus group discussions were conducted with 25 participants from four veterinary practices in England. Practices were purposively selected to represent those responsible for different types of racehorse, in different geographical regions. Thematic analysis of transcripts identified (i) an over-arching theme of serving the racing industry within which two further themes (ii) disregarding of the consensus and (iii) the pragmatic clinician were nested. The requirement to serve the racing industry was a key driver of clinical approaches, strongly influenced in particular by the trainer. Participants widely disregarded the consensus case definition of IAD/mEA for British racehorses because of perceived differences in aetiology, perceived lack of practicability, particularly of BAL sampling, and perceived lack of understanding of the British racing context by consensus authors. Participants shared a strong professional identity as pragmatic clinicians providing an individualised clinical approach based on direct experience, which was often prioritised as the most valuable evidence with which to inform clinical decision-making. Lack of alignment with international consensus presents a barrier to practising and furthering evidence-based medicine. Improved dialogue and partnership in research would be valuable and further research tailored for this population, including continuing development of contextually acceptable diagnostic methods, may be required

Simulating the in-field AC and DC performance of high-temperature superconducting coils
In this paper, the authors investigate numerically the in-field behaviour of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils and a method to potentially improve their performance using ferromagnetic material as a flux diverter. The ability to accurately predict the electromagnetic behaviour of superconductors in complex geometries and electromagnetic environments is crucial to the design of commercially-viable superconductor-based electrical devices, such as power transmission cables, superconducting fault current limiters, transformers, and motors and generators. The analysis is carried out using a two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric model of a circular pancake coil based on the H-formulation and implemented in Comsol Multiphysics 4.3a. We explore the use of flux diverters to improve an HTS coil’s performance with respect to its DC (maximum allowable/critical current) and AC (AC loss) characteristics, for various background magnetic fields. It is found that while flux diverters can improve the AC properties of coils, they can be detrimental to the DC properties in this particular configuration.Dr Mark Ainslie would like to acknowledge the support of a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship.
